Project Overview
The purpose of Jams is to create one single platform where musicians can create collaborations with other musicians in an efficient and easy way while surrounded by a social environment.
Offering tools tailored for musicians where they can organize all their needs, which saves time and creates functionality so musicians can focus on their creative musical content.
02
The challenge
Poor communication
Musicians who want to return to previous chat are frustrated because they are unable to find again who they were chatting with before.
Schedule
Musicians are unable to schedule time and place for collaboration.
Overflow of information
There is an overflow of information scattered in many sources but without answering and fitting musician needs
03
User research
Main Goals
Filtering
Musicians can define what they are looking for in collaboration: Genre, talent, location, availability and to discover other musicians who are also looking for the same common interests.
Scheduling invitation system
Making meeting musicians much easier by sending invitations and scheduling time and place.
Filtering chat conversations
By old conversation, date, from who, and unread chats and to create labels by subjects.
Location
Musicians can search other musicians, open mics and jams based on location.
Quantitative research - Online survey
I conducted an online survey among 31 musicians who are the target demographic user group, with the goal of learning and getting a statistical picture and identifying the challenges, "pain" points, needs, and difficulties they are facing when searching through multiple sources for collaborations and understanding what my users truly want and why.
The user questionnaire helped me reach the following conclusions:
Of replyers have difficulty scheduling time and place.
Of replyers have difficulty to remembering who they talked with and what media or group source it was.
Of replyers do not know if they have the same musical genre in common.
Of replyers do not know or are aware of other musicians nearby.
Of replyers having difficulty finding the specific musical talent they are looking for.
Of replyers are unaware of the existence of open mics or jams nearby.
Qualitative Research - Users interviews
In addition to the online questionnaire, I have interviewed individuals. I built a set of questions that deal mainly with understanding the difficulties that musicians tend to come across with their experience with older platforms and why it is so frustrating.
Through the interview, I've learned even more about their desires, needs, and pain points. It helped me identify barriers and opportunities for improvement.
Here are some quotes from the interview:
"I never get along with arranging meetings with people from these groups, Connections and conversations get lost in the sea of information. I want to have a separate place where all my conversations are saved."
"On busy days and with a tight schedule, I'd work for hours without even noticing it, and I didn't have time to go through all the different sources and search for musicians to collaborate with."
"It would be nice if there could be a profile that remains available and shows the same person is interested in A, B, or C, and whoever searches for A, B, or C will be able to find it."
"The transition between finding an interest and time coordination can often go badly, so it may be worthwhile to indicate on the profile the favorite times when other musicians can meet."
"Whenever I see a collaboration I was interested in on Facebook, the post collaboration is relevant for exactly half an hour."
